How we score — honestly & safely

The free Teen Level Check gives your teen an estimated English level so they know where to start. A level is only useful if you can trust it — so here is exactly what we measure, how we turn it into a level, and how we look after a young person's data. We would rather under-promise than show a number we can't stand behind.

What is auto-scored vs estimated

Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening & Reading — auto-scored

These have right and wrong answers, so we score them exactly against an answer key. For every question your teen answers, the result is precise; we then map their percentage to part of the estimated level.

Writing & Speaking (typed) — AI-estimated

There is no single "correct" answer to "tell me about your favourite game", so our AI estimates a level from how your teen writes — vocabulary range, grammar in use, how clearly the ideas connect — using the CEFR descriptors (the same A1–B2 scale schools and the Common European Framework use).

How we turn answers into a level

A1 Starter A2 Builder B1 Confident B2 Fluent

We combine the objective score (the parts with a key) with the AI's estimate of the typed answers, then place your teen on the CEFR ladder from A1 (just starting) to B2 (handles school topics confidently). The result page shows their estimated level, what they're already good at, what we'll work on next, and the best starting module — plus a plain-language summary written for parents.

The honest part: this is an estimated practice level to guide study — not an official exam result, school placement, or certificate. It's a smart starting point your teen can re-take any time as they improve.

When our AI says "we can't grade this"

If the AI marker is temporarily unavailable, we do not invent a number to fill the gap. We score every part that has an answer key, tell you the typed Writing/Speaking part couldn't be graded this time (an honest graded=false), and give you a clear estimated level from the parts we could score — with a note inviting your teen to re-run the typed task later. A blank is more honest than a guess.

Voice is coming — today it's typed

Real American-accent pronunciation scoring is on the way. For now the Speaking task is typed, so there is no recording and nothing to mic-check. When voice launches we'll tell your teen before any recording starts, recordings will be treated as sensitive data, and the typed version will always stay available as an alternative. Nothing here records your teen today.

What we never do

We never call a Ledoly level "official", "accredited", or a "school placement". We never promise a specific level by a date. We never reproduce real exam papers — every passage, question, and model answer is original, written by us at the right age and difficulty for teens.

A note for parents — your teen's data & privacy

The Teen Level Check is for under-18s, so we keep the data we touch to the minimum and put a parent in the loop. Here's exactly how it works:

Minors'-data, COPPA-style. Because this track is built for ages 13–17, we follow child-data principles inspired by COPPA: collect only what the level check needs, involve a parent or guardian, never use a child's data for behavioural advertising, and honour a parent's request to review or delete it. If your teen is under 13, please have a parent set up and supervise the account.

Independent platform

Ledoly is an independent learning platform. The CEFR (A1–B2) scale is a public framework we use to describe levels; we are not affiliated with or endorsed by any examination board, school authority, or the Council of Europe. Any level you see here is an estimated practice level, not an official result.

Tụi mình chấm điểm ra sao — thiệt tình & an toàn
